Thai Name: Ma Praw On / มะพร้าวอ่อน
A large seed that is the edible fruit harvested from the coconut palm tree grown in tropical regions around the world. The seed, referred to as the coconut, has a very hard, brown fibrous shell surrounding a creamy white flesh with a sweet, liquid milk in the center.
The shell or husk of the coconut grows to a size of 5 to 10 inches in diameter before being harvested. At the bottom of each coconut shell, three round, closed "eyes" are always present, which seem to form a face on the coconut. When the holes are opened with a sharp object such as a pick, they serve as a way to remove the liquid milk from the shell prior to cracking open the shell.
Coconut milk and meat contain up to 60% fat, the majority of it being saturated fat. Coconut meat, which is chewy in texture, can be shredded, dried and sold either sweetened or unsweetened to be used as an ingredient for baked items, desserts and candies.
