Such is the power of common usage, the areca nut is better known as betel nut because it is an essential part of the betel chew. Botanically, that which is called a nut is actually a seed.
The fruits grow on tall palms (up to 30 m/100 ft) in bunches of a hundred or more, turning an attractive bright orange colour when ripe. After drying in the sun the outer husk is removed and the large round seeds sold whole or cracked.
Special cutters are required to slice the hard seed thinly before using.
