Rose Apple (red) (500g)

Thai Name: Chom Poo

The rose apple originates from the West Indies and Malaya. The fruit is actively cultivated in South-East-Asia, India and the Pacific Islands. The rose apple was introduced to Jamaica in 1752 and is now widely distributed across the Americas.

Rose apples are generally grown in hot and subtropical climates, but have been known to grow in locations as north as California and San Francisco.

The fruit is almost round (bell-shaped) and 1 – 2 inches in size in most cases. To define if a Rose Apple is ripe, the fruit must appear greenish or a dull yellow green tinted with pink. When freshly picked, the fruit should have a crisp texture, and be almost crunchy when bitten. Each rose apple will contain 1 – 4 seeds, which are in fact poisonous, as are the roots of the plant. Some rose apples are sold as seedless, but these are experimentally grown fruit in which naphthoxy acetic acid was used as a growth regulator.

The Rose apple is grown at low-level elevations in warm climates. The fruit should be grown in conditions that are not subjected to frost. If planting the trees, one should understand that the tree needs a sufficient amount of space in which to grow.

Rose apples are compared to melons, texture wise, although they are much less juicer than melon. The apple is used in a variety of Thai cuisine dishes, especially known for being an ingredient in spicy Thai salads, which is one of Thailand’s most famous dishes. The spicy Thai salads are a massive favorite with Thai people themselves, alongside the high number of visitors who come to the country each year to sample the cuisine.

There are many varieties available in South-East-Asia, and the taste is quite sharp within all varieties.
