Peeled Thai Garlic Cloves100g

Thai Name: Kra Tiam

Thai garlic is prevalent in many of Thailand's favourite dishes. Garlic is very closely related to leeks, chives, onions and shallots. It is very popular for medicinal purposes as well as culinary. Garlic has a very pungent smell but this is replaced by a sweet and spicy taste when it is cooked.

Garlic is divided into what are known as cloves and these are fleshy in their outlook and feel. There does exist a garlic that contains only a single clove and it comes from the Yunnan province of China. This type of garlic is known as Pearl or Solo Garlic. The Garlic cloves are edible as are the flowers of the plant although the root is the only part that is not used for consumption. In Thailand the garlic is known as Kratiem and is used with a very large amount of different foods ranging from seafood to meat based dishes.

One famous dish that is often consumed is that of Moo Tod Kratiem Prik Thai. This is a Thai Pork dish with Thai garlic and pepper. With the garlic are also white pepper, salt and green lettuce leaves that are used as a garnish. Thai Garlic has been used for medicinal purposes and the garlic is found to have anti-fungal, antibacterial and antiviral properties. The consumption of garlic is said to prevent heart disease and lower cholesterol and blood pressure. There is a belief that garlic can also help in the prevention and the fight against the common cold.

Thai Garlic is also used in a very famous dish and that is Som Tum which is also very healthy and loved by just about every Thai person. This dish can be a little bit spicy though for the Western palate but it is very tasty.
