Thai Turmeric 100g

Thai Name: Kamin Leung

Thai Turmeric is also known in Thai as Kamin Leung and is part of the ginger family. Turmeric is relatively mild in taste and flavor when compared to other members of the ginger family. This rhizome is especially popular in Thai cooking because of its bright orange colour, which is used as a natural food colouring, as it becomes yellow in complexion.

Turmeric is widely used and popular in southern Thailand, where it is an ingredient for soups, curries, stir-fried dishes, snacks, fried foods and desserts. That is how diverse this ingredient can be. The lovely yellow that it provides makes it the ideal natural food colouring, as opposed to the more chemical based colouring's used in the western world.

Turmeric is noticeably much smaller than ginger, and is a root with a cylindrical shape tapered at both ends. The slender finger-like shape is only 1-3 inches in size. They do grow in various shapes such as curved and straight, with smooth and rough textures on its exterior.

During the warmer months of the year in Thailand, the turmeric is widely sold and obtainable from Thai markets and supermarkets. It has a delicate and mild flavor when compared to other ginger varieties, which makes it a diverse ingredient for Thai cuisine because it is not so overpowering and more subtle. Most curries and soups you will find in Thailand use turmeric, and its widespread usage only supports its subtle taste and unique natural colouring qualities.

This is also quite a medicinal herb, and the juice from the turmeric can be extracted and used as an antidote for blood poisoning or a natural antiseptic. There is no doubt that turmeric is a diverse herb for both its colouring qualities, subtle taste and its therapeutic benefits.
