Five Spice Powder is a mixture believed to be based on the ancient Chinese Philosophy of achieving a proper yin-yang balance of flavours; sweet, sour, bitter. spice and salty, Five spice is therefore an essential seasoning agent in Chinese cooking.

Traditionally added to stews, casseroles, steamed and braised food, a flavouring for sauces and gravies, it is also used as marinade for barbecue and many other dishes, including roast duck, roast pork, spare ribs, and smoked fish.
