Fresh Asian Nashi Chinese Snow Pears - Imported weekly from Asia
Asian pears have been cultivated for thousands of years in their two main native countries of origin, Japan and China. With a slight resemblance to the European pear fruit, Asian pears have slightly rough, textured skin; grainy white flesh which has a high water content. Due to this, they are most commonly served raw and peeled.
Asian pears are a good source of vitamin C for strengthening the immune system, vitamin K for supporting bone growth and dietary fibre to stimulate digestion. In fact, in traditional Chinese medicinal practices, Asian pears are considered a cooling fruit and can be used for detoxifying purposes such as reducing symptoms associated with constipation.
Due to their high water content, Asian pears are most commonly served raw and peeled into salad, juiced into beverages or mixed into marinades and sauces. When prepared correctly, Asian pears can also be suitable for cooked applications such as baking, steaming, poaching, added to stir-fries or served with roasted meats.
